Christ of the Ozarks, Monumental statue in Eureka Springs, Arkansas.
Christ of the Ozarks is a monumental concrete figure standing on Magnetic Mountain in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. The sculpture reaches a height of roughly 67 feet (20 meters) and shows a simple form with outstretched arms over the wooded hills of the region.
Sculptor Emmet Sullivan created the figure in 1966 after contributing to the work on Mount Rushmore National Memorial. The statue was built as the centerpiece of a religious complex that later expanded to include other attractions.
The figure forms the center of a site where religious performances take place from spring through fall. Visitors come here to pray, take photographs, or simply enjoy the view.
Paths lead up the hill and provide access to several viewpoints around the figure. The site remains open throughout the year, though rain or ice may make walking difficult.
The concrete construction was built with steel reinforcements designed to withstand extreme wind speeds up to 500 miles per hour (800 kilometers per hour). This stability protects the figure from tornadoes and severe storms that can occur in the region.
