Tegernsee, Alpine lake in Bavaria, Germany
Tegernsee is an Alpine lake in the Miesbach district of Upper Bavaria that stretches nine kilometers in length between forested mountain slopes. The body of water sits at 725 meters elevation and is surrounded by several towns that border the shore directly.
Monks founded an abbey on the northern shore in the eighth century, which formed the spiritual and economic center of the region for centuries. After secularization the monastery was converted into a royal palace that now serves as a hotel.
Villages around the shore take their names from geographic features, with Rottach-Egern named after its river inlet. On summer days locals favor walks along the waterfront promenades while swimmers and sailors make use of the waters.
The shore offers numerous access points to the water, with the western side dropping more steeply and the eastern side showing flatter sections. Hiking trails circle the entire body of water, with the route measuring between 20 and 22 kilometers depending on the chosen path.
Water temperature reaches about 23 degrees Celsius (73 degrees Fahrenheit) in midsummer, which is unusually warm for an Alpine lake. This warming occurs due to the sheltered valley position and relatively shallow depth in the shore areas.
