Burg Ebertshausen, Archaeological remains near Tegernsee Lake, Germany

Burg Ebertshausen is a medieval castle near Gmund am Tegernsee with visible stone foundations and tower remnants. The site contains the rectangular layout of the main structure along with traces of outer defensive works that once surrounded it.

The fortress began as a Roman watchtower and was later repurposed by the Tegernsee monastery for military defense. In 1468 it was systematically demolished and its stones were reused for buildings throughout the valley.

The ruins reveal how medieval fortifications protected religious communities in the region. You can see how closely the castle and nearby monastery depended on each other for safety and control.

Access to the archaeological site is limited since it sits on private property and requires prior arrangements. Visitors interested in exploring the ruins should contact local sources in advance to organize a visit.

The stones from the demolished fortress were scattered throughout the valley and built into local houses and chapels. This recycling of construction materials reveals how medieval communities reused resources from destroyed structures.
