Durnbach War Cemetery, War cemetery and architectural heritage monument in Gmund am Tegernsee, Germany
Durnbach War Cemetery is a war cemetery in Gmund am Tegernsee, Bavaria, holding over 2,900 Commonwealth burials alongside graves of servicemen from other nations. A book of remembrance on site lists the names of all those buried here.
The cemetery was established after World War II to gather airmen shot down over Bavaria, Wurttemberg, Austria, Hesse, and Thuringia. Soldiers previously scattered across multiple regions were brought together into a single burial ground.
A memorial on the grounds honors 23 servicemen from former India who died as prisoners of war across France and Germany. Visitors can pay respects and reflect on the experiences of these soldiers at this solemn place.
The grounds are maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and are open throughout the year. Benches and shaded spots are available across the site for those who wish to pause and pay their respects.
One grave on the grounds holds the ashes of prisoners who died at Flossenbürg concentration camp, and the exact number of people in that burial could never be determined. This makes it one of the few graves in the world where no count of the dead is possible.
