Durnbach War Cemetery, War cemetery and architectural heritage monument in Gmund am Tegernsee, Germany
Durnbach War Cemetery is a memorial ground in Gmund am Tegernsee containing more than 2,900 Commonwealth burials and graves of servicemen from other nations. The site includes a book of remembrance where visitors can find the names of all those interred here.
The cemetery was created after World War II to bury airmen shot down across Bavaria, Wurttemberg, Austria, Hesse, and Thuringia. It brought together fallen soldiers from multiple regions into one respectful place of remembrance.
A memorial on the grounds honors 23 servicemen from former India who died as prisoners of war across France and Germany. Visitors can pay respects and reflect on the experiences of these soldiers at this solemn place.
The cemetery grounds are maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and are open to visitors year-round. Benches and shaded areas throughout the site provide spaces for quiet reflection and remembrance.
One grave contains ashes of an unidentified number of prisoners recovered from Flossenbürg concentration camp. This burial represents victims whose exact count could never be determined.
