Bonn Botanical Garden, University botanical garden in Poppelsdorf, Germany
Bonn Botanical Garden is a university garden located in the Poppelsdorf district, with a large collection of plant species from around the world. Several glasshouses on the grounds are each dedicated to specific plant groups such as ferns, palms, succulents, orchids, and Mediterranean plants.
The garden was founded in 1818 on land that had previously been part of a medieval castle estate, and it was laid out in a Renaissance-style plan. After World War II caused serious damage, the site was largely rebuilt and reorganized.
The garden belongs to the University of Bonn and is regularly used by students as part of their coursework. Visitors can observe this academic side of the garden simply by walking through on any given weekday.
The garden is within walking distance of Poppelsdorf Palace and is easy to reach on foot or by bicycle. On cooler days, it makes sense to start with the glasshouses, which stay open year-round regardless of the weather outside.
The Victoria House contains giant water lilies of the species Victoria cruziana, whose flowers open white in the evening and gradually turn deep pink overnight. This color change is a natural process and can be seen directly by visitors who time their visit for late in the day.
