Ackeburg, castle
Ackeburg is a castle ruin perched on a hilltop above the Selke River in the Harz region. What remains visible are earthen ramparts, ditches, and defensive structures that reveal the layout and scale of the fortress.
Ackeburg first appeared in records in 1216 as a stronghold belonging to a noble family of the same name. It functioned as a defensive fortification for the region before being destroyed, leaving only the earthworks behind.
The site is accessible only on foot or by bicycle from nearby towns like Meisdorf or Ballenstedt. Sturdy shoes and weather-appropriate clothing are recommended since the terrain can be uneven and mountain weather changes quickly.
This fortress consisted of two distinct sections: a smaller outer ward and a larger main section spread across about two hectares. This unusual size for a medieval castle suggests it served as a refuge for many people from the surrounding area.
