Altmarkt, Central market square in Cottbus, Germany
Altmarkt is the central square of Cottbus, lined with residential buildings in Saxon Baroque style and classical houses from the 18th and 19th centuries. A sandstone fountain stands at the center, giving the space its visual focal point.
The square served as a trading center in the Middle Ages, where merchants and craftspeople sold goods under timber-framed houses. This role as a marketplace shaped how the space developed over the following centuries.
The fountain at the center of the square shows eight sandstone reliefs depicting craftspeople and market scenes from the city's past. Looking closely at the figures, visitors can recognize trades and everyday moments that once shaped life around the market.
The square connects to several streets, including Sandower Strasse and Berliner Strasse, giving easy access to shops, cafes, and the Altes Stadthaus nearby. It is easy to explore on foot and works well as a starting point for a walk through the city center.
The fountain was completed in 1990 and features a figure of Marie Groch, a historical cake seller, sculpted by Egmar Ponndorf alongside other market workers. Despite its recent origin, the work fits naturally into the square because of the old trades it depicts.
