Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, German symphonic orchestra
The Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra is a symphonic orchestra based in Munich that performs mainly in the Herkulessaal and Gasteig. The ensemble consists of highly skilled musicians from Germany and other countries who perform a broad repertoire from classical to contemporary works.
The orchestra was founded in 1949 based on musicians from an earlier radio group, with Eugen Jochum as its first chief conductor. Over decades, major conductors such as Rafael Kubelík, Lorin Maazel, and Sir Colin Davis led the ensemble before Sir Simon Rattle took the position in 2023.
The orchestra regularly performs contemporary works in the musica viva series, founded by composer Karl Amadeus Hartmann. This concert series shows how the ensemble shapes Munich's role as a center for new and experimental music.
The orchestra's concerts take place mainly in the Herkulessaal in the Munich Residence and Gasteig Cultural Centre, both easily accessible by public transport. Regular performances feature various musical genres, so it is worthwhile checking the program beforehand to choose a concert that suits your preferences.
The orchestra has operated its own BR-Klassik record label since 2009 and has won Grammy Awards for recordings such as Shostakovich's 13th Symphony. These awards demonstrate that the ensemble's quality is recognized globally through its recordings, not just through its live performances.
