Archäologisch-Ökologisches Zentrum Albersdorf

Archäologisch-Ökologisches Zentrum Albersdorf, Archaeological open-air museum in Albersdorf, Germany

The Archaeological-Ecological Center Albersdorf is an open-air museum with reconstructed Stone Age settlements and nine restored archaeological monuments spread across the grounds. Visitors can walk the paths to see burial mounds and dwelling sites from different periods displayed throughout the entire property.

The site preserves megalithic tombs and burial mounds from the period between 3000 and 1000 BC, built by the earliest farming communities in the region. These monuments show how settlement and ways of life evolved over thousands of years in Schleswig-Holstein.

The site brings Stone Age life into view through regular demonstrations of ancient crafts like fire-making, hide processing, and bow shooting. These activities happen in the reconstructed village and show how people worked and survived in that distant time.

The grounds are easy to explore on foot, with marked paths leading to the various burial sites and settlement areas. It is wise to wear sturdy footwear and allow time to visit all sections, as the property is spread out across the landscape.

The center actively reshapes the landscape to recreate environmental conditions from 5000 years ago by using animals for natural grazing. This program is rarely seen elsewhere in Europe and demonstrates how profoundly human activities have changed the natural world.
