Klopp Castle, Hill castle in Bingen am Rhein, Germany.
Klopp Castle is a stone fortress positioned on a hill above Bingen am Rhein, rising about 127 meters above the surrounding land. It features a southwest tower with four corner turrets and overlooks the Rhine Gorge and the surrounding landscape.
The castle was first documented in 1240 and sustained significant damage during the Thirty Years' War. It was rebuilt in 1653 following destruction from military conflicts.
The castle became a popular destination during the 19th century when Rhine tourism grew, attracting visitors who sought views of the river gorge. Today it remains part of how people see this stretch of the Rhine and imagine its romantic character.
Today the structure houses municipal offices and is partially accessible to visitors. The hilltop location provides the best vantage point for viewing the Rhine Gorge, a UNESCO World Heritage area.
An earlier fortification on this site may have been built during Roman times under Nero Claudius Drusus around 10 CE. This possible Roman origin could explain why the location was formerly known as Drusenburg.
