Armee-Konservenfabrik, Military canning factory in Mainz, Germany.
The Armee-Konservenfabrik is an industrial building in Mainz divided into five specialized production areas for military food supply. The complex contains a mill, bakery, vegetable processing plant, butchery with kitchen, and coffee roasting room that worked together as an integrated supply system.
Field Marshal Edwin von Manteuffel founded the factory in 1873 to supply troops with preserved rations for field operations. The facility reflected the growing industrialization and modernization of military logistics during the late 1800s.
The factory demonstrates how the military organized food supply and the importance of specialized production for troops in the field. The separate sections for baking, butchery, and vegetable preservation show that this facility created complete meals ready for soldiers to take into combat.
The site operated with six steam boilers and two steam engines that powered all production activities throughout the complex. Visitors should expect to see a range of industrial machinery and understand how different production stages connected to form a complete system.
The factory included its own gas plant and a pumping station that supplied fresh and cooling water for operations. This infrastructure made it a self-contained industrial complex with advanced utilities for its era.
