New Golden Steed Barrack, Military architectural complex in Mainz, Germany
The New Golden Steed Barrack is a military complex in Mainz featuring yellow brick walls, a six-axis central section, and four-story side wings. The ensemble displays neoclassical details with protruding corner oriels and was designed as a representative garrison facility.
The barrack was built during the German Empire period for the 21st Division of the Prussian Army and stood at the Mombach Gate of the Rheingau fortification wall. It was constructed as part of the defensive structure to secure the Mainz garrison in the late 1800s.
The place draws its name from an oversized golden horse figure that once crowned the main entrance, giving the complex a distinctive character. This naming reflects how buildings become rooted in people's memories through striking visual elements.
The complex is located in Mainz's Mombach district and can be reached by public transport or on foot. The site sits on private property and should only be entered with permission, though the exterior facades and overall structure are visible from the street.
The name comes from a golden horse figure that once decorated the facade of the original baroque structure and gave the site its distinctive identity. Though the statue no longer exists, the historical reference remains a core part of how people remember the place.
