Augustinerschule Friedberg, Educational heritage monument in Friedberg, Germany
Augustinerschule is a secondary school in Friedberg, Hessen, housed in a building complex made up of sections from different construction periods. The oldest main building dates from 1901, with later wings added to provide more classroom and facility space.
The school was founded in 1543 as a Latin school and first operated inside the Barfüßerkloster monastery. In 1581 it moved to the Augustinerkloster, and it has carried that name ever since.
The school takes its name from the Augustinian monastery where it was once housed, and that name has stayed with it ever since. Walking through the building today, you get a sense of how deeply rooted learning has been in this town for centuries.
The school sits in the center of Friedberg and is easy to reach on foot from the town center. Since it is an active school, any visit to the grounds is best planned outside of regular school hours.
The Augustinerschule is one of the five oldest secondary schools in Hessen, with a history spanning more than four centuries. It was also one of the first schools in the region to admit a female student, which happened in 1905.
