Friedberg

Friedberg is a medieval town in Wetteraukreis district, Germany, spreading across a basalt plateau and enclosed by old fortification walls. Narrow lanes and multi-story half-timbered houses lend the center a historical look that extends across squares and smaller streets.

The settlement gained Free Imperial City status in 1211 and grew into a noble republic ruled by twelve families. The fortress split into an imperial section and a civic section, shaping political organization over centuries.

The name Friedberg comes from a medieval fortress that once sat atop the raised basalt ground and shaped trade and civic routines. Residents today meet around the old market square, where half-timbered houses and the old town hall give the center its character.

The main railway station links the town to Frankfurt via S-Bahn line S6 and offers connections to the regional rail network. The center is easy to explore on foot, as most sights lie within the old town walls.

Elvis Presley lived at Ray Barracks during his military service from 1958 to 1960, leaving an American trace in the area. Fans still visit sites around town connected to his stay and recall that period.
