Wasserturm und Gedenkstätte auf dem Wartberg, Water tower and war memorial in Friedberg, Germany

The Wartturm on the 173-metre Wartberg is an octagonal tower of unrendered reinforced concrete, tapering upward in three stages, with sides about six metres long. Above the pointed-arch entrance, sculptor Hugo Siegler's flat relief of Friedberg's crowned double-headed eagle covers the facade. The memorial hall below measures ten metres wide and roughly 50 metres long, and the years 1870–1871, 1914–1918 and 1939–1945 stand at eye level on the shaft.

The building was constructed between 1923 and 1928 as a practical solution for storing water for the city of Friedberg. About four years after completion, it was repurposed in 1932 to permanently honor the region's war casualties.

The memorial hall beneath the octagonal tower bears the dates 1870–1871, 1914–1918 and 1939–1945 at eye level on the shaft facade, marking the wars commemorated since the hall was inaugurated in 1932. A copper oak wreath lies on an oversized symbolic grave slab in front of the free-standing curved wall, used for laying mourning wreaths. A metal plaque reads "Ehrenstätte für die Gefallenen der Stadt Friedberg".

The tower stands at Frankfurter Straße 23 on the 173-metre Wartberg. Two large angled stairways lead up to the tower entrance, and the viewing terrace on the roof is open to the weather. Since the stairs and crypt decayed, the entrances have been closed to the public in the new millennium, so check access before setting out.

The 48-metre flat relief of Friedberg's coat of arms above the pointed-arch entrance was designed and executed by sculptor Hugo Siegler: a crowned double-headed eagle with a shield on its breast. The years 1870–1871, 1914–1918 and 1939–1945 are set at eye level on the tower shaft, and a copper oak wreath lies on an oversized symbolic grave slab in front of the free-standing curved wall of the hall of honour.
