Wetteraukreis, Administrative district in Hesse, Germany
Wetteraukreis is an administrative district in Hesse with Friedberg as its seat and includes 25 municipalities of different sizes. The territory extends north of Frankfurt between the Taunus range and the foothills of the Vogelsberg.
The Wetterau changed ownership several times over the centuries between different rulers and noble families. The current district structure emerged after World War Two through administrative reforms in Hesse.
The name Wetterau comes from the Wetter River, which runs through the region and shapes the landscape. Residents today use the land intensively for farming and leisure activities, defining the character of the district in everyday life.
The district administration in Friedberg handles administrative matters, while most municipalities have their own information points. Trains to Frankfurt run regularly from several stations throughout the district territory.
Bad Vilbel within the district is considered the largest spa town in Hesse and has several mineral springs. The smallest municipality Kefenrod sits at the edge of the Vogelsberg and preserves its village character.
