Glauberg, Archaeological site in Hesse, Germany

Glauberg is an archaeological site in Hesse containing burial mounds and fortified structures from Celtic times, located on a hill at about 280 meters elevation. The site spans several hectares with preserved earthen ramparts, settlement areas, and numerous burial locations that record the life of an Iron Age community.

The site was inhabited during the Iron Age, likely from the 5th to the 1st century before Christ, when Celtic groups controlled this region. Modern research since the 20th century has shown it was an important center that used trade networks across Europe.

The burial mounds reflect how much the Celtic communities here valued honoring their ancestors, with grave goods showing different social ranks among them. Visitors can see how these mounds shape the landscape and understand what meaning these people placed on their dead.

The site is accessible on foot via marked trails, and an information center offers exhibits and materials to help understand the finds and Celtic history. The best time to visit is during dry weather, as the ground can become slippery otherwise and the paths difficult to walk.

The site is known for containing unusually many statues and reliefs of Celtic warriors in its graves, which is rarely found at other sites from this period. These artworks provide insight into how power and identity were portrayed in Celtic society of that era.
