Alter Flugplatz, Urban park in Kalbach-Riedberg, Germany

Alter Flugplatz is a park in the Kalbach-Riedberg district that spans a large area and connects different habitats together. Besides the former runway, it contains tree clusters, open meadows, and wetland areas extending toward the Nidda River that support various animal and plant species.

The site was established by the United States Army in 1951 as a helicopter base named Maurice Rose Airfield. After about 40 years of military operation, its active duty ended in 1992 and the land was repurposed.

The bronze sculpture on the Robert Gernhardt pedestrian bridge displays the city's green belt mascot and shapes how people experience this location as a connecting point. It represents the park's role within Frankfurt's broader network of green spaces.

The former 750 m runway is preserved in full length but narrowed in the west from 21 m to about 3 m, so it works as a straight walking route. The adjoining meadow is mown regularly and may be used for lying down. From March to October, Landschaftslotsen are on site and give information about frogs, birds and plants.

The concrete slabs of the eleven helicopter parking squares, each about 100 m², were removed and reused: stacked as a viewpoint at the end of the taxiway, laid on the former squares, or set upright there. The runway kept its full 750 m length but was narrowed in the west from 21 m to about 3 m.
