Alter Flugplatz

Alter Flugplatz is a park in the Kalbach-Riedberg district that spans a large area and connects different habitats together. Besides the former runway, it contains tree clusters, open meadows, and wetland areas extending toward the Nidda River that support various animal and plant species.

The site was established by the United States Army in 1951 as a helicopter base named Maurice Rose Airfield. After about 40 years of military operation, its active duty ended in 1992 and the land was repurposed.

The bronze sculpture on the Robert Gernhardt pedestrian bridge displays the city's green belt mascot and shapes how people experience this location as a connecting point. It represents the park's role within Frankfurt's broader network of green spaces.

The park offers observation zones, walking paths, and various activities for families held regularly. Vehicle access is limited during nighttime hours to help protect the habitats and maintain the peaceful conditions of the site.

The site hosts over 100 bird species and about 10 amphibian species in its wetland areas, making it an important refuge for wildlife. This biodiversity emerged from converting the former airfield into a nature reserve with educational stations.
