Riedwiesen bei Niederursel

Riedwiesen bei Niederursel is a protected nature reserve with numerous ponds, ditches, and water features between the Frankfurt districts of Niederursel and Heddernheim. This roughly 20-hectare area hosts specialized plant species as well as amphibians and small mammals.

The site represents the last remaining section of the original Nidda meadows, which disappeared due to industrial development and highway construction. This landscape once belonged to extensive floodplain areas that shaped the river valley before human activity dramatically altered it.

This protected area serves as a place where visitors learn about wetland ecosystems and their importance for urban wildlife. Many people come here to experience nature and understand how these habitats support life in the city.

Visitors should stay on marked paths to protect the sensitive habitats. Flat shoes and moisture-resistant clothing are practical choices since the ground is often wet.

Two natural springs, Bornfloss and Bonifatius, emerge from Riedberg and supply water to this wetland. These springs allow the entire ecosystem to thrive even during drier periods.
