Batschkapp, Music venue in Seckbach, Frankfurt, Germany
Batschkapp is a rock and pop concert venue at Gwinnerstraße 5 in the Seckbach warehouse district of Frankfurt, in a converted former plastics factory. The single-storey hall is clad in light grey vertically profiled metal panels, with a dark red projecting block on the left; a black banner on the frontage carries the Warsteiner emblem and the cursive lettering "Batsch". The venue holds up to 1,500 people.
Batschkapp was founded in 1976 to establish an autonomous and left-wing counter-culture and opened on 11 December 1976 in Maybachstraße in Eschersheim, in a building that had housed a cinema from 1949 to 1965. Facing tax debts of DM 30,000 and rising fire-safety costs, it was kept open by a 1982 benefit concert with Ideal and BAP. On 10 December 2013 it moved to a former plastics factory on Gwinnerstraße in Seckbach, raising capacity from 350 to 1,500.
The name Batschkapp is Hessian dialect for a flat cap, and regulars call the club simply "die Kapp". Since 1976 it has hosted concerts, club nights and band competitions, and in its early years also street-theatre workshops. Since February 1993 the management has also run the smaller Nachtleben club at Konstablerwache.
The venue is at Gwinnerstraße 5 in Seckbach, in the eastern warehouse district; the old site was Maybachstraße 24 in Eschersheim, by the S-Bahn station. The hall holds up to 1500 people, against 400 at the former club, so large concerts no longer move to Offenbach or Neu-Isenburg. The management also runs the smaller Nachtleben club at Konstablerwache.
The new venue on Gwinnerstraße is a former plastics factory, which is why the hall looks like an industrial shed rather than a classic concert house. The club had already run a second, smaller location called Nachtleben at Konstablerwache since February 1993.
