Bad Fredeburg, Kneipp spa resort in Schmallenberg, Germany.
Bad Fredeburg is a Kneipp health resort in Schmallenberg municipality in North Rhine-Westphalia, situated in the Sauerland mountains at around 800 meters elevation. The village features guest accommodations, a thermal bath with slides and sauna areas, plus several hiking trails that lead visitors through meadows and forests.
The area developed around a castle built in the 14th century by Dietrich III of Bilstein as a fortified stronghold. Later, the village grew into a known health resort thanks to its natural springs, especially after receiving its Kneipp spa designation in the 1990s.
The place takes its name from a medieval fortress whose heritage remains visible in the landscape today. Locals and visitors use the hiking paths to explore the surroundings while connecting physical activity with relaxation in the natural waters.
The village is easy to reach by car, and the site itself is small with walking paths connecting accommodations and the bath facility. The area is best explored on foot or by bicycle since hiking trails start directly from the village.
The Kneipp cure is based on a special method from the 1800s that uses alternating cold and warm water baths to strengthen the body. Visitors can still experience and practice these water therapies today much as they were developed over a century ago.
