Beginenturm, Medieval defensive tower in Mitte, Germany
Beginenturm is a medieval defensive tower in Hannover featuring three distinct levels and thick stone walls that showcase the construction techniques of the period. The structure presents itself as a compact cylindrical tower with characteristic window openings and a solid foundation that reflect its original defensive purpose.
The tower was built in 1357 as part of Hannover's city fortifications and was originally known as 'De nye Torn'. It marked an important defensive point and was later repurposed as a creative space in the modern era.
The tower served as an artist studio for many years, attracting painters and sculptors who set up workshops within its walls. This creative use shaped the building's identity and made it an important gathering place for the local art community.
The tower's interior is open to visitors, particularly following renovation work completed in the early 2010s. The visit requires no special preparation, though the internal stairs can be steep and narrow in places.
The tower's foundation extends deep underground and incorporates stone materials from an earlier Romanesque church that once stood on this site. This material reuse demonstrates how medieval builders integrated older structures into their new projects.
