Ballhof, Renaissance theatre building in Mitte district, Hannover, Germany.
The Ballhof is a Renaissance building in Hannover's Mitte district, now used as a theatre. Its main hall has a flexible seating layout that can be arranged differently depending on the type of performance.
The building was constructed between 1649 and 1664 on the former grounds of St. Gallen Court, on the orders of Duke Georg Wilhelm. It later served as an auction house and a storage space before being converted into a theatre.
The theater presents contemporary interpretations of classic plays, new works by emerging authors, and experimental productions through its Young Division. Audiences experience a blend of traditional repertoire alongside modern artistic approaches.
The Ballhof sits in central Hannover, in the Mitte district, and is easy to reach on foot from the city centre. Coming a little early gives you time to look around the building before a performance starts.
The Ballhof was built as a covered court for ball games, which is exactly where its name comes from. This makes it one of the few early modern sporting buildings in Europe to have become an active theatre.
