Holzmarktbrunnen, Historic fountain at Holzmarkt, Hannover, Germany
The Holzmarktbrunnen is a decorative fountain with a granite basin surrounded by wrought iron grating featuring ornamental details. It sits in front of the Leibnizhaus and forms part of the old town's character with its carefully crafted metalwork.
The fountain was built in 1896 to commemorate the centenary of Oscar Winter's iron goods business. It was substantially rebuilt in 1954 following damage sustained during World War II.
The fountain takes its name from the timber market that once operated in this square. Visitors can still see traces of this past trade in the metalwork that decorates the basin.
The fountain sits at the heart of the Mitte district and works well as a landmark for navigating the old town. The location is easy to reach on foot from most nearby areas.
During construction work in 1983, a truck unexpectedly sank and revealed an older, previously unknown well beneath the current structure. This hidden layer shows how long people have gathered water at this spot.
