Holzmarktbrunnen, Historic fountain at Holzmarkt, Hannover, Germany
The Holzmarktbrunnen is a historic fountain in the Mitte district of Hannover, made up of a granite basin enclosed by a wrought iron grating with ornamental details. It stands directly in front of the Leibnizhaus, one of the main buildings of the old town area.
The fountain was built in 1896 to mark the centenary of Oscar Winter's iron goods business. After serious damage during World War II, it was largely rebuilt in 1954.
The fountain takes its name from the timber market that once stood on this square. The wrought iron details around the basin reflect the craft traditions that shaped this part of the old town.
The fountain is in the heart of the old town and easy to reach on foot from most nearby sights. It makes a natural stopping point when walking through the area.
During construction work in 1983, a truck sank into the ground and uncovered an older, previously unknown well beneath the current structure. This find shows that water has been drawn at this spot for much longer than the fountain itself suggests.
