Naval Academy at Mürwik, Maritime academy in Flensburg, Germany
The Naval Academy at Mürwik is an officer training institution of the German armed forces located along the Flensburg waterfront. The complex comprises several red brick buildings with gothic features, organized into teaching, residential, and administrative sections.
The academy was founded in 1910 and replaced the former naval school in Kiel as the primary officer training center. It later briefly served as the seat of the last German government before becoming part of the postwar structure.
The academy shapes its students through naval traditions and ceremonies that connect generations of officers to each other. Visitors can observe these lived customs in daily routines and formal occasions throughout the complex.
The grounds are located directly on the water and partially open to visitors, though certain areas are restricted for security reasons. It helps to check in advance about opening times and possible tours to explore the grounds properly.
For a short period in 1945 the grounds served as an administrative seat under Admiral Dönitz, holding a rare chapter of German history. This episode is rarely known and often overlooked, though it marks one of the most turbulent turns of that era.
