Mürwiker Marine-Wasserturm, Water tower in Mürwik, Germany
The Mürwik Marine Water Tower is a brick structure in Flensburg that rises approximately 30 meters (100 feet) tall and stands beside the Naval School. The building displays characteristic features of Brick Expressionism with pronounced vertical lines and was later converted into residential units.
The tower was built in 1908 and served the Naval School as a water storage facility for drinking water supply. After the school connected to the public water system in 1981, the structure lost its original purpose and was later renovated and repurposed.
The tower stands next to the Naval School and defines the character of the Mürwik neighborhood. Its distinctive brick exterior with strong vertical lines remains a visual landmark that residents and visitors notice immediately.
The tower is now a residential building and can be viewed from the outside. You can appreciate the architecture best by walking through the neighborhood and observing the structure from different angles.
In the early 2000s, the former water tank was converted into multiple residential floors while keeping the historic exterior intact. This project earned the Federal Award for Craftsmanship in Monument Conservation in 2013.
