Bonte-Kaserne, Military barracks in Flensburg-Mürwik, Germany
Bonte-Kaserne is a former military facility in the Mürwik district of Flensburg, Germany, located on Ziegeleistraße. The brick structure rises three stories with a hipped roof and evenly arranged windows along the facades.
The structure was completed in 1944 during World War II as military quarters and named after Friedrich Bonte, a German navy commander who fell at Narvik in 1940. After the war, the facility housed the Federal Motor Transport Authority before undergoing thorough renovation in 2012.
This building carries the name of a naval commander and shows the plain architectural language of 1940s military construction. People now live in the converted apartments inside, while other areas serve as office spaces.
The building has been a protected monument since 1998 and is not open to the public today, as it contains private apartments and offices. Visitors can view the exterior facade from Ziegeleistraße.
The first postwar tenant, the Federal Motor Transport Authority, experienced problems with their punch cards, which absorbed moisture from the nearby Flensburg Fjord. The cards were used to manage the truck fleet and swelled in the archive rooms.
