Bornberg

Bornberg is a mountain summit in the North Palatine Uplands with two peaks called Kiefernkopf and Trautmannsberg, located in Kusel county. The site hosts a radio transmission tower and a solar installation on its slopes.

The summit became a basalt quarry site from 1840 onwards under Basalt AG management, with mining operations continuing until 1970. This industrial activity prompted the creation of a worker settlement called Schneeweiderhof in 1924 to house laborers nearby.

The Bornberg area reveals archaeological evidence of ancient settlements, including a Roman estate farm and Celtic community discovered during a 2002 rescue excavation.

The walk to the summit offers views across the surrounding hills and valleys. Trails in the area are accessible to visitors and allow exploration of the former quarries on the mountain.

A major natural gas pipeline was installed across the mountain in 1972, linking the Netherlands to Italy through German territory. This infrastructure project became an important energy corridor for the region.
