Potzberg, Mountain summit in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany.
Potzberg is a mountain summit in the Hunsrück-Taunus range in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, reaching 562 meters above sea level. It sits within a forested area in the Kusel district and is the highest point in the immediate surroundings.
During the 18th and 19th centuries, cinnabar, a mercury-bearing mineral, was extracted from the northern side of the mountain, making it an economically important site. The mining activity left visible marks on the terrain that can still be noticed today.
The summit is a popular destination for families from the region, largely because of the wildlife park at the top where deer and wild boar can be seen up close. A tower built in 1951 rises above the trees and gives a wide view over the Palatinate countryside on clear days.
Several marked hiking trails lead up to the summit from different directions, making it accessible for most walkers. A hotel and a wildlife park are located at the top, so a visit can easily fill a full day.
Until 1997, a hill climb race was held on the mountain, with drivers racing from the village of Mühlbach up to the summit. The event was well known in the region at the time but has since faded from public memory.
