Schneeweiderhof, Cultural heritage monument in Eßweiler, Germany.
Schneeweiderhof is a residential settlement in Eßweiler with two- and three-story buildings made from basalt stone blocks. The structures form a cohesive group and show the typical construction methods of the region.
The settlement was designed between 1922 and 1924 by Cologne architects Heinrich Mattar and Eduard Scheler. It was built to house workers from the local stone quarry industry.
The buildings show features of regional Heimatstil architecture, connecting the needs of quarry workers with local materials. You can see in the details how the daily life of stone workers was woven into the design of the place.
The site is easy to explore on foot and shows both living spaces and work areas like courtyards and stables. The buildings are visible from outside and give a good sense of how the settlement was organized.
The buildings were made directly from basalt stone from nearby quarries that the workers themselves extracted. This material gives the settlement its characteristic gray tone and connects the living place directly to their work.
