Lebensalter, Public fountain at Wittenbergplatz, Berlin, Germany.
Lebensalter is a fountain at Wittenbergplatz that combines bronze, steel, concrete, granite, and volcanic rock in a multi-part sculptural design. The various materials create a layered structure where water flows at different levels and through different forms.
The fountain was completed in 1985 as a collaboration between artist Waldemar Grzimek and sculptors Christian Höpfner and Hartmut Bonk. Since its creation, it has remained a permanent fixture that defines the character of the square.
The sculptures depict the human journey through different life stages, from youth to old age, in a way that viewers immediately understand. People often stop to examine each figure and connect them to the fountain's central theme.
The fountain sits at a major transit intersection in the district and is easily accessible by public transportation. The open space surrounding the installation invites visitors to linger and offers good views from multiple angles.
The water's movement and sounds shift throughout the day and with weather conditions, giving the installation different moods at different times. Many visitors only notice these subtle changes after visiting multiple times.
