Brunnenkirche, Romanesque church in Erfurt, Germany
Brunnenkirche is a Romanesque church in Erfurt with a three-sided eastern end and late Gothic carved figures inside. A compact organ with nine registers, installed in 1952, stands in the choir area.
The church was built in 1253 on the site of a pre-Christian fountain dedicated to the goddess Silvia. After a fire in 1472, it was restored and reshaped several times over the following centuries.
The name comes from a fountain that once stood inside and held religious meaning for the community. You can see how this fountain is depicted in the church's artwork and architectural details today.
The church is open to visitors during regular hours, and information is available on site. Keep in mind that access may be limited during religious services or special events.
The fountain that gave the church its name remained active until 1957, when it was filled in during renovation work. Five paintings discovered in 2021 tell the story of this fountain and its importance to the building.
