Burgstelle Kybfelsen, Medieval castle ruins in Günterstal, Germany.
Burgstelle Kybfelsen is a medieval castle ruins on a ridge at about 820 meters (2,690 feet) elevation between Guenterstal and Kappel valleys. The site displays visible wall remnants and foundation traces of a defensive tower structure.
The fortress was built in the late 11th century during the rule of the Zaehringer dynasty, a powerful medieval family in the southwest. They chose this rocky location to establish a strategic stronghold commanding the surrounding valleys.
The site takes its name from the Kyb rock formation, which shapes the landscape where the fortress stood. This natural feature remains the defining characteristic visitors notice when exploring the ruins.
The site is accessible via marked hiking trails starting from both valley areas. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear and be prepared for steep sections, particularly after wet weather when rocks can be slippery.
A natural rock crevice cuts through the castle grounds and served the medieval inhabitants as a natural defensive barrier. This geological feature made extra fortification walls unnecessary on that side.
