Burg Lahr

Burg Lahr is a medieval castle set on a wooded hilltop overlooking the Wied river valley in southern Hesse. A distinctive round stone tower marks the skyline and conveys a sense of the original defensive purpose of this position.

The fortification was built between 1300 and 1400, initially serving as a fief under the Counts of Isenburg. Control passed to the Counts of Nassau in 1449, marking a shift in regional power during the late medieval period.

The ruins serve as a gathering place for community celebrations that mark the turning of seasons and connect visitors to local traditions. People come here for special occasions, maintaining long-standing ties to this hilltop location.

Access is via woodland paths from Burgstraße, with walking conditions varying by season. A wooden shelter on-site can be rented for group gatherings, making it useful for larger visits or events.

The distinctive round tower underwent comprehensive restoration in 2014 and 2015, with medieval structures carefully preserved. This work has kept the building's original defensive character recognizable to modern visitors.
