Deutsche Barockgalerie, Art museum in Schaezlerpalais, Augsburg, Germany
The Deutsche Barockgalerie occupies the first floor of Schaezlerpalais and houses around one hundred paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries. The works come mostly from Augsburg artists and fill the spaces with baroque and rococo grandeur that defines the rooms.
The gallery was founded in 1958 to preserve the baroque artistic heritage of the city. A major renovation between 2004 and 2006 updated the spaces while keeping the collection at the heart of the palace display.
The collection displays works by local artists such as Josef Heintz and Johann Georg Bergmüller, who shaped artistic creation in Augsburg across generations. These paintings reflect the artistic tradition that developed in the city and continues to define its cultural identity.
Access to the exhibition spaces is through the historic palace building located in central Augsburg and easily reached on foot. Visitors should allow enough time to explore the collection at a comfortable pace.
The collection documents a progression from High Baroque to the elegant Rococo art that reflected the distinctive "Augsburg taste" of the 18th century. This artistic direction shows how differently artistic development unfolded in the city compared to other European art centers.
