Fuggerhäuser, Renaissance residential complex in Maximilianstraße, Augsburg, Germany
The Fuggerhäuser form a complex of two connected buildings with four interior courtyards. These courtyards feature Tuscan columns, arcades, marble work, and decorative water fountains.
Jakob Fugger commissioned the complex between 1512 and 1515. It was the first Renaissance-style building constructed north of the Alps.
The Fugger family shaped the city's identity through this complex. Walking past the extended facade on Maximilianstraße, you can still sense the wealth and influence that these merchants commanded.
Three of the interior courtyards and the ground floor hall can be visited. Access is straightforward, and a bookstore nearby offers more information about the place.
Martin Luther was interrogated here in 1518. This event became an important moment in Reformation history.
