Deutsches Theatermuseum, Theater museum in Hofgarten, Germany.
The Deutsches Theatermuseum is housed in the Churfürstlichen Gallerie building in Hofgarten and displays exhibitions about German theater history through props, costumes, and stage designs. The collections document theatrical practices and artistic approaches from different periods with considerable depth.
The institution was founded in 1910 after actress Clara Ziegler donated her villa and her collection. Following wartime damage, the museum relocated to its current Hofgarten location in 1953.
Theater holds a central place in German cultural life, and the collections here show how performers and designers shaped the stage over many generations. The costumes and set designs on display reveal what audiences valued and how the performances reflected the times they lived in.
The museum is best visited during daylight hours, as the exhibitions benefit from natural light throughout the rooms. Allow two to three hours to explore the collections at a comfortable pace.
The museum holds around five million photographs of theater productions, among the most extensive collections of its kind worldwide. These images offer visitors a window into productions and performers from decades past that would otherwise be lost to time.
