Reiterstandbild König Ludwig I., Bronze equestrian monument at Odeonsplatz, Munich, Germany
The Reiterstandbild König Ludwig I is a bronze statue on a natural stone pedestal at Odeonsplatz in Munich. The figure shows the king on horseback in armor, approximately 20 feet tall, supported by an imposing stone base.
Artist Max von Widnmann created this monument in 1862 to honor King Ludwig I, who had abdicated a few years earlier. Ferdinand von Miller cast the bronze in a technically demanding process that became a work of skilled craftsmanship.
The statue depicts Ludwig I in armor at one of the city's most important squares. It reflects his passion for architecture and culture that shaped Munich's identity.
The monument sits at Odeonsplatz at the corner of Ludwigstrasse and the square, easily accessible by public transportation. Wheelchair users can approach the statue from multiple sides of the square, as the surrounding area is flat and open.
The statue was modeled after designs by Peter von Cornelius, director of Munich's Academy of Fine Arts at the time. This connection links the artwork to the city's living artistic tradition during the 19th century.
