NSG Reeser Schanz, Nature reserve in Xanten, Germany.
The NSG Reeser Schanz is a nature reserve along the Rhine's left bank near Xanten, featuring reed beds and flood meadows on sandy-gravelly soil. The site spans roughly 71 hectares and is regularly shaped by river floods, which maintain the natural character of this habitat.
The conservation area was officially designated in 1999 and gained European protection status in 2004 as part of the Natura 2000 network. This recognition made it one of many protected habitats across the European Union.
The site serves as a critical stopover for migratory birds and waterfowl seeking food and shelter during their seasonal journeys. The reed beds and wet meadows provide essential breeding and wintering habitat for these species.
Access to the site is possible on foot or by bicycle, with marked trails making exploration easy. The best times to visit are spring and autumn when migratory birds are present, though summer also offers plenty to observe.
Between 2009 and 2015, a three kilometer diversion channel was constructed to stabilize the riverbanks and protect the historic town gate. This engineering project demonstrates how flood protection and nature conservation can work together.
