Battenbergturm is a late medieval residential tower of brick standing beside the Buschkampshof farm, 750 metres northeast of Haldern's centre in Rees. Its plan measures 7.24 by 7.07 metres, with a low cellar and two upper floors reaching about 15 metres, walls 86 centimetres thick, cross-mullioned windows, a latrine oriel on the ground floor and a glazed-brick figure of the presumed builder set into the east wall.

The Buschkampshof beside the tower was first recorded in 1377. In 1494 Duke Johann II of Cleves enfeoffed the armour-bearer Amelongh von Escharden with the farm; he became a court messenger in 1494 and a judge in Rees and Aspel in 1498, and probably built the tower in the early 16th century. In 1639 the estate was still called a knight's seat, but no longer in 1674; in 1676 and finally 1681 it passed to the von Wittenhorst-Sonsfeld family.

The name Batenberg likely derives from the old German word for tower, Berg, and the office of its presumed builder Amelongh von Escharden, a court messenger (Bote) in Rees from 1494. Since 1993 the Heimatverein Haldern has used the tower: a permanent exhibition on the village's history occupies the ground floor, cultural events are held upstairs, and the attic holds archive and work rooms.

The tower stands 750 metres north-east of Haldern's centre, directly beside the Buschkampshof farm, and is open to visitors on the first Sunday of each month in summer. The tower was probably built by Amelongh von Escharden, who became court messenger in Rees in 1494 and judge in Rees and Aspel in 1498; the name Batenberg likely means "tower of the messenger". Glazed bricks on the south side spell out V D M I AE – D H W B I E, for Verbum Domini Manet In Aeternum, the Lord's word endures forever.
