Dicke Eiche, Natural monument near Airlenbach, Germany.
The oak tree stood at an elevation of 340 meters near Airlenbach, measuring 35 meters in height with a circumference of 8.3 meters.
Dating between 800 and 1000 years old, the oak underwent multiple restorations, including a major renovation in 1958 funded by industrialist Carl Freudenberg.
Local traditions connect the oak to the Nibelungen saga, suggesting that the legendary hero Siegfried planted the acorn from which this tree emerged.
The remaining five-meter stump, protected by a roof structure, marks the starting point of multiple hiking trails through the Odenwald region.
A section of the original trunk was transformed into an altar for the chapel at Erbacher Kreiskrankenhaus after the tree was cut in 2012.
