Peenemünder Haken, Struck und Ruden - Gebietsteil A, Nature reserve in Peenemünde, Germany
Peenemünder Haken, Struck und Ruden is a protected area spanning coastal waters and several islands at the mouth of Peenestrom, featuring forests, salt marshes, and shallow waters. The site combines different habitats within a compact area.
The region was long marshy land with salt meadows used for grazing before military development in the 1930s changed the landscape. After the war, it became protected as a nature reserve.
The reserve today serves as a place where visitors can directly experience the importance of coastal conservation. Access routes and entry points are deliberately limited to protect the habitats of birds and plants.
The site is best explored on foot via marked trails, though access points are controlled at several locations. Water routes offer an alternative way to explore the islands and shallow waters independently.
Beneath the shallow coastal waters grow extensive seagrass meadows that feed and shelter many fish and crustaceans. These underwater plants are mostly invisible but play a crucial role in the health of the sea ecosystem.
