Lotsenturm Thiessow, Communication tower and viewing platform in Thiessow, Germany
Lotsenturm Thiessow is a communication tower with an observation platform located on a high point on Rugen island in northeastern Germany. The structure allows visitors to look out across the Baltic Sea and the surrounding landscape.
The pilot service in this area started in the 1630s when local fishermen guided ships through treacherous waters. A permanent observation structure was built in 1854 to better support this navigation service.
The keeper's house at the base displays maritime objects and bells that tell the story of pilots who guided ships through these waters. These items show how vital this work was to keeping Baltic trade routes safe.
The platform stays open all year and costs very little to enter. Parking is available nearby, and the view works best on clear days.
On clear days, visitors can see multiple islands and coastal areas at once from the top, including Usedom and Greifswalder Oie. This wide view across water and land helps people understand how this region sits geographically.
