Mönchgut, Nature reserve in Vorpommern-Rügen, Germany.
Mönchgut is a nature reserve along the Baltic coast with steep cliffs, pine forests, and open meadows. The area consists of several separate sections including coastal waters and spreads across the villages of Sellin, Göhren, and Baabe.
The region takes its name from a monastery that once owned the land here. In 1990 it gained official protection as a nature reserve within the Southeast Rügen Biosphere Reserve.
Museums in the villages display fishing traditions and the clothing styles that locals wore for generations. Walking through these collections gives visitors a window into how people here lived and worked.
Multiple trails connect the villages and offer routes for different fitness levels. Good footwear is important, especially on cliff paths where the ground can be uneven and muddy.
Ancient stone tombs from the Neolithic period show that humans have lived in this area since prehistoric times. The reserve also shelters gray seals and rare orchid species that grow nowhere else nearby.
