Emssee

Emssee is a nature reserve in Rietberg that contains several different habitats for plants and animals. The land includes wetland areas and meadows crossed by paths and bordered by the Ems river.

The area was placed under protection in 1981 to preserve local ecosystems and the variety of species in the region. This decision came from growing awareness about protecting natural habitats in North Rhine-Westphalia.

The place draws birders who come to watch the many species that settle here and raise their young. You can see this wildlife activity throughout the year, especially during migration seasons.

The area is accessible by paths that are also part of the Ems Cycle Path and offer good connections to nearby towns. The best access is from Rietberg, where you will find parking and information points.

The area is an important passage for migrating bird species and plays a central role in regional conservation programs. Many rare species use the wetland habitats as a rest stop during their long journeys.
