Schloss Rietberg, Medieval château in Rietberg, Germany
The château stands on elevated ground with remnants of inner and outer moats that formed part of its original defensive structure in the 14th century.
Initially constructed before 1353 as a fortified castle, the structure underwent transformation into a Renaissance-style château during the 17th century under local counts.
The château served as an administrative center for centuries, reflecting the governance patterns of German noble families through architectural and functional modifications.
The château's location along the Ems River provided strategic control over regional trade routes and water access for the medieval settlement.
The fortress endured a six-month siege in 1557, resulting in the capture of Count Johann II, who later died in imprisonment in 1562.
