Rietberger Fischteiche, Nature reserve in Rietberg, Germany.
The Rietberger Fischteiche contains 26 ponds of varying sizes and depths, creating diverse wetland zones with reed beds and aquatic vegetation.
Between 1900 and 1904, these ponds were artificially constructed in marshland, specifically in the area of former moats surrounding Rietberg Castle.
The ponds were initially established for breeding carp and tench fish, reflecting traditional German freshwater aquaculture practices in North Rhine-Westphalia.
While the nature reserve remains private and closed to the public, visitors can observe the wildlife from a designated viewing platform along the Ems River.
The reserve serves as a critical habitat for numerous water birds, including the bittern, which has returned to the area in recent years.
