Evangelische Stadtkirche, Schorndorf, Gothic church in Schorndorf, Germany
The Evangelical City Church is a late Gothic place of worship in central Schorndorf with a 66-meter tower that rises above the town. The building sits west of the historic marketplace and is surrounded by older commercial and residential structures of the town center.
Construction started at Easter 1477 and was funded through the sale of indulgences to support the community at that time. A major fire swept through the town in 1634, destroying much of the structure but leaving the choir vaults intact, which were later restored.
The church displays religious artworks and architectural elements from different periods that visitors notice during their time here. Sacred figures and older decorative details reflect the spiritual life this community has maintained over generations.
Visitors can explore the church during open visiting hours and experience the interior with its artworks and architectural details. The central location makes it easy to reach while walking through the old town area.
Among the seven bells of the church is the Cross Bell from 1652, a precious heritage piece many visitors miss during their visit. This old bell carries inscriptions and has been rung for services and important occasions across many generations.
