Wartturm, Rock formation in Sächsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge, Germany
Wartturm is a sandstone column rising about 20 meters from a base near the Elbe River, located close to the Bastei rock formation in Saxon Switzerland. The wall displays the yellowish-brown color typical of Elbe sandstone and contains numerous climbing routes cut into its face.
The first recorded climb took place in 1894 when mountaineers established the classic route up the formation. The rock experienced a major collapse in 2000 that significantly altered its shape.
The rock formation draws climbers who work routes into its sandstone face, making it a meeting point for the local climbing community.
Climbing here requires previous experience with rock faces, and some sections may have access restrictions. Plan your visit between spring and autumn when weather conditions are most stable.
In low light conditions, subtle structures in the sandstone become visible that are hidden during bright daylight. These details help climbers read the rock layers and understand its natural geology.
