Karstadt München Bahnhofplatz, Department store at Bahnhofplatz, Munich, Germany.
Karstadt at Bahnhofplatz is a six-story retail complex positioned opposite the central railway station and featuring multiple specialized shopping departments. The store offers clothing, accessories, home goods, and electronics across spacious sales areas.
The building was designed in 1904 by Max Littmann, Julius Seidler, and Jakob Bradl, opening on March 14, 1905. The Renaissance Revival style was chosen to harmonize with Munich's existing architecture.
The building displays German Renaissance elements through its five-story hipped roofs, stair towers, gables, and dormers that shape the cityscape. These architectural features make the location an important part of Munich's visual identity.
The store sits directly opposite the main railway station and is easily reached on foot from there. Multiple floors house different departments, so allow time to explore the various sections.
The facade is supported by a hidden steel skeleton structure, with artistic decorations created by Julius Seidler, Jakob Bradl, and Fidel Enderle. These ornamental details often go unnoticed by visitors but define the visual character of the entrance area.
